remodelOnce you decide to remodel your home, the sky can be the limit. But before you start envisioning yourself as a DIY handyperson, be careful. There are some things that are easy for you to do on your own and  others that are probably best be left up to a professional. Here are five projects that you could probably tackle yourself without tearing out your hair (or a wall!)

Painting – Sometimes hiring a painter can feel like it costs and arm and a leg. As long as you are patient and willing to take the proper steps, painting some walls can totally be a DIY experience. Just make sure you prep your walls properly before painting (which can often take longer than painting itself!) and use a test area to see exactly how the paint will look once dry.

Demolition – If you want to save a little money before hiring a contractor, demo or gut the area that will be worked on yourself. But before you go all crazy with that sledgehammer, make sure you’ve met with a professional and asked them exactly what and where you should be demo-ing. (i.e. Ask about wiring and support beams.)

Adding architectural elements like crown molding or wainscoting – This is actually a pretty straightforward project as long as you make sure to triple-check the measurements of your walls. Add some glue and nails, and voila, a fresh new living room!

Upgrading hardware – Swapping out the knobs and hinges can make a huge difference in refreshing your home, and all it takes are usually a couple of tools and the new hardware itself.

Tile work – Okay, let’s be honest, tile work isn’t for everyone. But if you’re the patient meticulous type, you might even find the task of laying down and measuring tile, dare we say it, relaxing. Remember to triple check your measurements and if you’re still feeling unsure many of the major hardware stores even offer free classes on laying down your own tile.
