Winter can do a number on our skin, hair, nails, you name it.  And it’s a minor setback that the day tailor made for love happens to fall dead center in the middle of beauty’s hiatus.

But there are plenty of beautifying steps you can take to make sure you are fresh-faced and ready for romance the night of the 14^th.

A good friend of mine has been running every day for as long as I can remember.  She made the assumption that because she ran long distance, and because most marathon runners wore Asics, she should follow suit.  But on a recent trip to buy new sneakers, an employee pointed out her flat feet, got down on the floor to observe her walk, and declared that she should buy a different shoe.

It was all about her personal pronation.  What’s that? People fall into three categories: normal pronation, overpronation, and under pronation.  For a great description on pronation check out Runner’s World.

After a long run, unless we are wearing the right shoes, our feet, back, et al., are usually wailing in pain, and a good running shoe that fits your specific foot is pertinent.

There are three types of running shoes:

Motion Control: For people with flat or low arches

Stability: For people with medium arches

Cushioned: You guessed it… designed for people with high arches.

There should be a thumbnail length of space in the toe box of the shoe.  This usually means you have to go up ½ a size. None of us like to wear bigger shoes. But in the case of the running shoe, a poor fitting shoe can cause all kinds of problems, including back issues and bunions.

You should replace your shoe every 350-550 miles.  Not when the tread runs thin and you slide down that mountain.

And it depends on what kind of running you do: long, short distance, sprints, stairs.  What you’re running on informs your shoe choice as well, i.e., sidewalks are terrible for knees.  Even if you’ve been running for years and assume you know what the right shoe is, you could easily be mistaken if you’ve never asked.

Not that kind of nude. 2011 saw a lot of color blocking, bold prints on runways, even silky-pajama like outfits.  But trends seem to be returning to simpler times. Simpler outfits. People are streamlining their lives in all capacities.  And in 2012, less is more.

Nude pumps.  Foremost, these babies elongate your leg, creating some kind of leg extension optical illusion.  Christian Louboutin is the undisputed master of the nude patent pump, but simple pump like Nine West’s Nickeya off-gold pump will never go out of style and can be paired with just about anything.

The Little Nude Dress.  It’s like stepping out in your birthday suit. And if Louboutin is king of the nude heel, then Calvin Klein rules the court of the little nude dress. Top Shop has a couple of great options including: the Knitted Chunky T-Shirt Dress and The Tennis Dress by Boutique.

The Long Nude Dress. Gives you a bit more coverage.  Again look to Calvin Klein for inspiration.  This beautiful dress from Spring 2012 is lust-worthy. Anthropologie has a feminine and romantic long pleated nude dress called the Halvah Maxi Dress.  It looks best on ladies that are tall and slender, but is great for day-to-night transition. The cut out on the shoulder provides a nice peek-a-boo balance to the length. And lets you show off all that yoga you’ve been doing in the New Year!

Nude Stockings. Thanks to Princess Kate and her sister, it’s a throwback to the past. Say buh-bye to lines, creases, cellulite, and veins. At least for the evening.

Nude Frames. Ladies and gents alike have been going bold with their choices in eyewear, but for a more refined, less obvious choice, frame your face with a pair of Burberry Bifocals that are modish, classic, and of course, nude.

If you are like me, you were anxiously awaiting the arrival of Missoni for Target back in September. Well ladies, get ready for the amazing arrival of Jason Wu for Target on February 5th.  His designs are hot, hip and fun but most of all affordable.  For those of you that don’t know who Jason Wu is, i’ll tell you.  He first burst onto the fashion scene back in 2009 for creating the gorgeous dress that Michelle Obama wore to President Obama’s innaguration.  After that dress was worn, his career has not been the same.  He is known for his gorgeous ready to wear collections and amazing creations.  Fun fact, he started his first collection with the earnings of his doll designs.

The average woman spends five whole days in front of the mirror every year. It is no wonder the beauty industry is a 160 billion plus dollar industry.  Many women have reported that the recession has not affected their need to look their best.  Even if that means spending more than they should on beauty products and roaming the stocked walls and aisles of Sephora.

Well in 2012. Less is more—both in cost and quantity.  And 2012 can also be the DIY year, if you aren’t afraid to take matters into your own hands.

We love organic products, but not always the organic price tag.  Many companies are working to lower the prices of their natural products that are cost efficient for the average consumer. Whole Foods is carrying 97% natural hair line Love + Toast for under $15. And if you’ve been living under a rock, Moroccan Oil is simply the best. And because sleek hair will always been en vogue, it’s the best treatment for your buck.

We spend a ton on highlights and lowlights, but at home hair color is getting more succinct and easy to use. Courteney Cox famously revealed her $9 hair-coloring trick.  She has Friends money and still uses Clairol brass-free brunettes treatment. And while at-home treatments have the stigma of being accident-ridden, many companies are coming out with foam, mess-free applications.  Clairol has  one—and the reviews are positive.

If you’re going to splurge, do it on a concealer. Cle de Peau Beaute isn’t inexpensive, but it isn’t exorbitant. And it’s worth it. You won’t need a drawer full of cosmetics with the Clea de Peau Beaute Compact Foundation Set. Instead of wasting money on multiples, spend the money once.  Plus it will help you get rid of all that clutter.

The dry clean only tag can be the bane of the girl on a budget. I’ve got a basket of dry cleaning that ashamedly has been piling up for a year. Word to the wise don’t ever under any circumstances follow suit. You’re better off not wearing your favorite pieces then letting stains sit and ruin them.

The problem is, dry cleaning is not cheap, especially since fashion brands have taken to stamping a dry clean only tag on just about everything.  But there are a lot of items you don’t actually have to dry clean.

Fair warning: wash at your own risk, but these are all rules I follow, and they haven’t failed me yet.

100% Rayon: Anything that is 100% rayon will usually tell you it has to be dry cleaned.  Not so. You can either hand wash in cold water, or wash on delicate in cold.  You have to line or hang dry. Don’t wring out the item, but press the water out.

Don’t freak if your favorite rayon dress looks smaller.  Rayon fabric tends to give the appearance of shrinking when washed, but when hung to dry, it will return to its regular shape.

Cashmere: It’s winter. You want to layer with cashmere.  But it gets costly to clean a sweater every time you wear it out.  Some emboldened ladies just wash and dry their cashmere, but The Laundress offers a Wool & Cashmere Shampoo.  Hand wash and line dry.

Quick tips and tricks:

• Examine your clothes and spray stains with pre-soak spray.
• Turn your clothes inside out.
• Typical hand wash soak time is 30 minutes (and never soak silk for longer).
• Test out a couple of pieces.  Be gentle and patient.  And you’re sure to see that dry cleaning bill whittle down.

Fashion has long drawn inspiration from military baubles and jackets, nautical themes, even a pirate or two. But this winter, think a little more practical and take a tip or two from the sea captain (think less leisurely nautical summer more hard-nosed fisherman), as fisherman sweaters and other seafaring themed wares take over.

Fisherman sweaters, originally hailed as The Aran sweater, take their name from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. A classical fisherman’s sweater is a bulky garment with prominent cable patterns on the chest. They last for decades and are a great investment sweater and are perfect for the unpredictability of winter. Wear one on a crisp stroll or bundled up beneath a jacket.

As always J.Crew has a couple of takes on the Irish classic.

There is the classic Handknit Fisherman Cable cardigan in snow.

For a pullover with a more of a punch of color, the Fisherman Sweater in acorn is a mix of alpaca and wool.  This mixed stitch sweater has a s lightly shorter silhouette and looks great paired with ahigher waist pant.

There are a ton of vintage fisherman sweaters on Etsy for incredibly reasonable prices.

This Boat to Nowhere sweater, circa 1960-70 features a spit neckline with lapels, two side pockets and raglan sleeves.

If you like buttons, this Fisherman Sweater from seller   fanciness is hand cream wool knit with two front pockets, shawl collar, and brown wooden button closure. Better yet, it’s in excellent condition.

Keeping in line with cable knit, sometimes you just want to be fashionable but cozy.  Shakuhachi designed a Cable-Knit Playsuit that is mad to be worn curling up with a cup of hot cocoa.

And of course, every fisherman has his cap.  Channel Captain Cousteau with a little red beanie.

Turtlenecks aren’t the typical go-to for a girls-night-out. In fact, most of us would rather hibernate than throw on such a constricting get-up. Ever since the word hemline entered the fashion vernacular in the 1930s, we ladies have been taking advantage of showing off, rather than covering up.  And turtlenecks are not part of that repertoire.

But there are a few occasions and frosty-temperatured nights, where a turtleneck could be just what Mother Nature and Mother Fashion order.

Here are few important tips for wearing a turtleneck that are sure to flatter your face and body.

Fabric is a key component.  Cotton turtlenecks that wore under ski clothes in the 80s are a no-go.  Slim knits are flattering, and anything that is a little chunkier textured looks great on petite ladies or those will small-busts.

Fit and fall are vitally important as well.  The thicker the knit, the higher the hem should hit.  If you’re wearing something on the thicker side, make sure it hits above your hips to avoid looking bulky.

Know your neck and know your bust.  If you have a short neck, a solid color is best. A slouchier, draped-neck also helps create a longer line. If you have a longer neck or a small bust, a dramatic, oversized neck will create good lines. A classic turtleneck is good for long or short necks, but bad business for big busts.

Accessorize properly. If your face is wide or the rounder side, make sure to pull your hair up into a ponytail.  If your hair is hiding your jaw line and your neck is covered up, even the highest-cheekboned ladies will have some trouble.  A long pair of earrings can also help elongate your face shape. If you’re shorter, wearing dark jeans will help elongate the overall look.

If you are unwilling to face pale skin in the winter do not fret. Tan skin without the summer sun is possible, not to mention safer!

Skincare companies are constantly coming out with self-tanning lotions with new, less-orange formulas to bronze our winter white skin. However, I have still had quite a few fake-tanning mishaps, as I’m sure you have too! Here is a way to avoid them.

Make sure to exfoliate before tanning. Then, in order to prevent zebra-stripe streaking use a gradual tanning lotion such as Jergens Natural Glow ($9.99) or L’Oreal’s Sublime Glow ($10) before applying an instant tanning lotion or aerosol spray such as L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze ($10.79) or Neutrogena Micro-Mist Airbrush Sunless Tan Spray ($11.99). This will create a natural-looking base which is then enhanced, if you so choose, by the instant tanner resulting in a streak-free glow.

As temperatures start to drop across the country—ah yes, East Coasters have already felt the chill of Jack Frost—layers are packed on, heads are beanied, and fingers are mittened. But you don’t have to lose your fashion panache just because we’ve lost the sun.

This winter add some Burgundy to your winter palate.

Call it Port, Cranberry, Rust, whatever! Burgundy is a color too often overlooked, but it’s a perfect compliment to chilly weather and hot cider.  Most websites have a color bar on the side, so if you want to do some browsing, just click open the color closest to burgundy (almost always red) and peruse away.  In the meantime, here are some goodies to get you started.

American Apparel is good for basics.  They have a Burgundy Sleeveless Sheer Chiffon Blouse that features generously cut arm openings and wide neck that will look smashing when you pull off all your top winter layers.

They also have a perfect, form fitting Cotton Spandex Jersey Tube Dress that can be adjusted and transformed into a dress, top or skirt.  It’s the perfect bottom layer to pop out from beneath a sweater and coat. Pair it with a great tan boot and sweater.

And if you just want a little pop of Burgundy, layer these Pointelle Over-the-Knee socks over tights and into boots. They’ll provide and extra bit of warmth and their pointelle pattern adds a sweet twist to any outfit.

James Dean wore a leather jacket like nobody’s business.  We can’t all look that cool.  And some of us can’t seem to figure out how to wear leather (jackets, pants, or otherwise) without looking like biker chicks.

So if you’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate leather into your day-to-day, look no further.  Leather accents on clothing can add the right amount of edge to softer looks, and hip up your wardrobe without going overboard

If the leather dress isn’t up your alley, the Christina Leather-Accent Dress by Diane von Furstenberg pairs a patchwork of leather and silk. It’s just the right amount of naughty and nice.

Elie Tahari takes a more feminine approach with the Callie dress.  This dress has subtle leather trim and a softer fall color palate.

This Olive and Oak Leatherette Tee is almost outfits your top in full leather garb but leaves soft knit accents on the sleeves. It’s also animal friendly. Faux is sometimes the best way to go.

If you can’t pull off the whole hog (no motorcycle required) motorcycle jacket, Rebecca Minkoff RTW Fall 2011 had a great alternative. The designers Linda jacket blends khaki with lambskin leather for the best of prep and rocker chic. 

Aiko makes a beautiful and sporty Hack B Knit Sweater with a small leather accent at the boat neckline.

The Mackage Eloise Chic Coat is part military, part French sophisticate, with the smallest leather detailing on the sleeves.
