Toe bones are typically small and fragile. That’s why these bones can break after dropping something heavy on them or even stubbing a toe, says MedlinePlus. Usually, a broken toe is not a serious injury and can be cared for at home.

To care for a broken toe at home, MedlinePlus suggests:

  • Buddy taping. Wrap tape around the injured toe and the one next to it. Place a small wad of cotton between your toes and change the cotton daily.
  • Wear stiff-bottomed shoes. Once the swelling has gone down, wear solid, stable shoes.
  • Seek prompt medical attention if the injury appears severe or doesn’t respond to treatment.
