Just because you’ve returned home from a trip abroad doesn’t mean you can’t get sick, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

Here are the agency’s suggestions for what to do when you get back home:

  • Visit your doctor if you are not feeling well after a trip. Be sure to tell your doctor where you went.
  • If you went to an area that may be prone to Zika, apply insect repellent for at least 3 weeks after you return. This will reduce your chances of possibly spreading the virus via local mosquitoes. Also use condoms for at least 2 months to prevent the possible spread of Zika through sexual contact.
  • If you’re pregnant and you went to a Zika-prone area, talk to your doctor about being tested for the viral infection, even if you don’t have symptoms.
