Jennifer Lawrence did it. So did Anne Hathaway, Victoria Beckham and Charlize Theron. Even Julianne Hough jumped on the train. What train is this? The pixie haircut train, of course! It’s short, it’s sassy, and… it’s scary. If you’ve ever thought of jumping on the bandwagon, it’s totally understandable if you’re struck with a mini panic attack first. After all, it’s quite a dramatic cut. And while the aforementioned celebs make it look effortlessly cool, styling short hair is often a lot of work. But before that is the question all women ask before changing their hairstyle – can I pull it off? So how do you find out if a pixie cut is right for you? Here are some tips to get you started.
Consider your face shape. Not all pixie cuts are equal for all face shapes. Something that may look great on your BFF with the long oval face may not look so hot on your adorable heart-shape frame. If you have a generous forehead or a long face, you’ll need less volume on top (and don’t be shy to tell this to your stylist), if you’re more on the round-faced side, you’ll need to up the volume and the length to help elongate your face a little.
Do your stylist research. Find someone who specializes in short cuts especially since you’ll want it personalized to your face shape.
What’s your personality? Are you an introvert who doesn’t like lots of attention? Then a pixie cut may not be for you. For some reason, short hair on women still tend to draw a lot more eyes than longer styles. And be prepared for a barrage of questions about why you did it from everyone from family to coworkers. Short hair also literally covers less than long hair, so there will be nothing to hide behind. So if you’re going to go for this cut, you really have to learn to own it.
Consider the maintenance. Very rarely is a pixie cut just wash and go. So consider that you may have to invest in some styling products as well as more frequent than usual maintenance visits to the salon to keep your cut looking fresh.
