I have always been a fan of cartoons.  Even before having kids, I would go see Pixar movies in the theatre.  Now that I have kids, I don’t have to feel quite so silly renting animated films, because you know it’s for the kids… not me!  Anyway, my family just recently discovered Despicable Me.  It was sort of off my radar because it wasn’t one of the big (in my opinion) animation studios.  The big ones  being Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks.

I am so glad that I took the time to check this one out though.  This is a gem from Universal Pictures, it is hilarious with plenty of humor for moms and dads, and has a touching story.  Gru, the main character is a Super Villain, ready to steal the moon.  Part of his plan involves three little orphaned girls.  Of course, much to his surprise he ends up falling in love with the girls, and turns into a fantastic dad.  The character arc is fantastic, and believable.  I mean, if you have kids you can completely relate to how your life can completely do a 180 the minute you have children.  And if all that isn’t enough, you can always count on the fabulous voice talent in this movie, Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig  just to name a few.

On top of all this fantasticalness, is the band of minions.  My daughter calls them “Cheeto People.”  They alone are worth seeing the movie for.  I would say this movie is best for kids five and up, it’s not too scary, and has plenty of humor right for their age.  So if your family hasn’t seen it already and is looking for a great flick for a family movie night, don’t look past Despicable Me!
