A glass of wine may initially help you drift off to sleep, but it’s hardly a prescription for a quality night of rest.

Here’s how alcohol can interfere with sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation:

  • Alcohol’s iniitial sedating effects wear off, which could make you more restless and likely to waken.
  • Alcohol interferes with REM sleep, which could affect memory and concentration.
  • Women are more likely than men to have poor sleep after drinking alcohol.
