Kids can learn to prepare easy microwave meals and snacks, but they should know some simple safety rules first.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends:

  • Enabling only children who are old enough to read, understand and properly use a microwave.
  • Having potholders nearby, and teaching children to always use them when removing food.
  • Explaining to children the importance of stirring microwaved food before eating to distribute heat and avoid burns.
  • Teaching children how to open containers so that steam doesn’t blow directly into the face or hands.
