Boys just seem to be slightly less interested in books. At least in our family. I’ve nearly gone out of my mind trying to find books that get my son’s excitement level up. We love to read books out loud to the kids. It all started with The Chronicles of Narina. We started reading and loved that calming effect before bed time. My daughter loves to read and have stories read to her, any kind at any time. My son’s attention span wavers more quickly. So I have been on the hunt to find “boy” books that I think my boys will love, and that support the kind of man I hope he turns into. Daunting task, I know. I have come to notice that my son enjoys characters that get into mischief, just like he does. That was my jumping off point. These books have become some of our family favorites.
- The Princess Bride by William Goldman (yes, it’s actually a real book! You will no doubt love reading this aloud to your kids if you, like me, grew u watching the movie.)
- Goblins in the Castle by Bruce Coville
- Danny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. Actually anything by Dahl is a favorite around here. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, it goes on, we love him!
- Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
- Superfudge by Judy Blume (another classic from my childhood!)
- Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar
- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. A proper nerd education begins early in life.
- The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid
- Stuart Little by E.B. White
- The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
- Encyclopedia Brown series by James Preller
- Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
So far these have been the books that grasped the attention of my boys and daughter alike. Plus they have made for some great family reading time!
