Before having kids, I always knew that I wanted to be the type of family who went camping. Growing up, I never went. We had plenty of
family vacations, camping was just never one of them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it matters if you camp in a tent, or in a huge camper trailer. The point to me is just to get away as a whole family, to get away from all the distractions that are found in our day to day lives.

Of course camping with kids, especially when little, can be a bit more of a challenge. Your packing list must be a bit bigger for the kids, but it will help to ensure that you don’t lose your mind out in mother nature. Each of my kids has a lovey, one that they cannot possibly sleep without. Make sure to bring any comfort items that your kids need. Small child hand size flash lights are also fantastic. Try to find one that your child can operate easily. This will help them feel secure knowing they can turn on the lights when necessary. A folding potty is a fantastic item to pack. My kids never enjoy the options of toilets while out camping. I found a toddler sized foldable potty at Babies r Us that is a must have for any of your littler ones.

Consider what your kids prefer to eat. They will be happier, and more comfortable if some of the food is familiar. I am completely against bringing lots of electronics on a camping trip, but I know kids will need entrainment. We always pack puzzles, board games, and lots and lots of art supplies. My kids didn’t have a problem with the noise of the out doors, but I always do. The sounds are just different enough that my body senses the change and gets confused. I’m a light sleeper to start. So if you have any light sleeping kids you might want to consider a white noise machine. It can help everyone get a good nights rest so you have energy for all the fun nature adventures you are sure to have!
